If you have been following our blog, you know we already wrote about How to Get Hired in the Customer Satisfaction Industry. Once you know what to look for and what the job requirements are, the next step is the interview! Even though it might seem like a daunting task, interviews don’t have to be difficult. Read our article below so that you can be better prepared for your next job interview in the customer success industry:
Step 1: Research the company, the product and the position
No matter if you are a novice or a pro in Customer Success, one thing which always makes a good impression during a job interview is being familiar with the company and the position. Do your due diligence in advance in order to improve your chances of getting hired. Customer Success usually has a strong focus on adopting a product, so learn as much as possible about it in advance. Ask insightful questions about the company, the product and the position to demonstrate that you are serious about the job.
In addition, if the product has a free trial, sign up for it and use it so that you are familiar with its features. Watch any demo videos there might be and make yourself familiar with the product and the company.
Finally, try finding people who work for the company and talk to them to get an impression about the company’s culture. If you can’t find any ex or current employees, look up reviews on Glassdoor. You need to be able the answer the question “Why do you want to work here?” convincingly and with passion.
Step 2. Research the interviewer
The same way the hiring manager will research you, you need to research them. Check out Linkedin, Xing, Google, etc. Be familiar with their experience. Thus, you can predict what questions they might ask you and you can ask them relevant questions back. In case you are not entirely certain who your interviewers will be, ask your recruiting contact for a full list of the individuals and their job titles.
Step 3. Make a good impression and connect to your interviewers
One of the most important factors during an interview is the impression you leave your interviewers with. Try and build rapport with the hiring managers. By winning them over you win the hiring game! An interview can last anywhere between 30-60 minutes, sometimes even longer. So make sure to take the time to emphasize what the mutual benefits and value of you being hired in the company are.
Step 4. Know Customer Success inside out
Customer success should be your bread and butter! If you don’t have much experience in the customer success industry yet, make sure to research the topic in advance as much as possible. Be familiar with the lingo and the main metrics.
(Psst, read our article on the Most Important Metrics in the Customer Success Industry to get yourself familiar with the metrics).
Step 5. Come with questions
You will most probably not only be asked questions about your experience, qualifications, education, etc, but also be expected to ask questions too. And here we are not talking about how many vacation days you will get or how early you can leave!
Ask insightful, smart questions about the company and the product. Base your questions on who are you talking to and make sure to ask all the interviewers at least one or two.
We hope this article will help you get ready for your Customer Success job interview. However, what happens next is up to you! Good luck!
